The Bay of Spirits (BoS) is a frontier fantasy setting born of grit, hardship, famine, and war. The area is poised on the cusp of greatness. But it needs more souls – more pioneers to claim the land and plenty of adventurers to clear the way.
For fifteen centuries, the folks of the Bay of Spirits have toiled on sea and land, carving an existence from a place that does not want them here.
Civilization has been built upon the ruins of ancient cultures, sprouting from the toppled and overgrown foundations of countless millennia. Many here are naively unaware of the secrets lingering around them – in primeval forests and dark coves – where archaic secrets and forgotten horrors slumber beneath soil and waves.
The Bay of Spirits Setting (BoSS) encompasses an area that includes the BoS proper, the North (Thaurdor), the Western Fiefsteads, and part of the Eastern Colonies. The region is expansive with myriad options for wilderness, waterborne, urban, and subterranean adventure.
Settlements in the area range from tiny hamlets to large towns, so there’s no shortage of opportunities to delve into the local culture, history, and lore. The folks that inhabit the region are typically hardworking and tolerant of outsiders and adventurers – so long as they bring no trouble.
Numerous factions abound, including both official organizations (abbeys, churches, trade guilds); unofficial groups (mercenaries, cults, adventurers); as well as nefarious enterprises (smugglers, wreckers, assassins). All play some role in the setting, creating endless ideas, plenty of intrigue, and a slew of adventure hooks.
The Bay of Spirits is based on the illustrations and maps of randy m. With roots deeply embedded in old school table-top roleplaying games, particularly 1st Edition AD&D, the setting is a low-fantasy, rather mundane world built upon an ancient and fantastical base. This element fuels the underlying theme and accounts for many of the features found in a fantasy roleplaying world. A significant portion of the Bay of Spirits Setting is available on DriveThruRPG, along with a number of system-neutral publications.
